Psychological Evaluations

A psychological evaluation is an assessment of a person’s behavior, personality, emotional functioning, and cognitive functioning. It is a great starting point in mental health treatment, as it can aid in diagnosis and treatment planning. These tests help psychologists determine the nature and severity of a person’s struggles, while giving insights into treatment options. A clinician has a variety of assessment tools available, and will personally tailor your assessment based on the reasons for the evaluation. Psychological testing can detect developmental delays in children, give insights into an individual’s personality, and assess intelligence and aptitude, just to name a few.

If you or someone you know is referred for psychological testing and assessment, you probably have questions, concerns, and maybe a little apprehension. Although this is common, you need not worry! During a psych evaluation, patients simply receive knowledge to better understand and manage their issues and symptoms.

What to expect:

Your appointment will take several hours, starting with a conversation with your doctor about your symptoms and history (or personal “story”). Afterward, there will be a lengthy “testing” portion with questionnaires, etc. Again, please don’t feel intimidated by this portion of the evaluation, as the information gathered is simply used to help you. Feel free to bring a drink or snacks to munch on.

After your appointment, it will take your doctor several weeks to complete your report, as he/she will need to score all of the testing and write your report. We will reach out as soon as it is completed and send it to you via fax or email with a password-protected PDF document. If you have any questions or concerns about your report once you receive it, feel free to make a follow-up appointment to go over it in detail with your psychologist.
