At Discovery Counseling we believe that therapy is beneficial for each and every person, as the therapeutic relationship fosters personal growth, self-discovery, healing, and change. Our therapists use a variety of approaches and techniques. This aims to give clients greater insight and understanding about themselves and their relationships, and to develop new tools to deal with conflicts and struggles.
What We Do:
We provide therapy for children, adolescents, college students, adults, couples, groups, and families.
Some of our specialties include:
The heartbeat of Discovery is treating the survivors of trauma. In fact, we believe that trauma of some kind is the underlying factor in many, if not most, mental health issues, and trauma is the focus of many interventions listed below. It is our greatest passion to bring restoration and healing to those in our communities who are suffering.
Are you experiencing a loss of interest in things you previously enjoyed, a change in sleep patterns or appetite, feeling tired or down? You could be experiencing symptoms of depression, one of the most common mental health struggles among individuals today. You are not alone, and are making the right decision to reach out for help. We are here for you.
Do you find yourself worrying often, experiencing body tension, irritability, and difficulty making decisions? Anxiety is also quite common, and symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, schoolwork, and relationships. Psychotherapy is very effective at treating anxiety, and all of our therapists have interventions that can help provide relief.
Transitions are a natural part of life, but they can be tough for all of us – whether it is starting college, getting married, changing jobs, becoming a parent, relocating, dealing with a divorce, aging, or entering a new general stage of life. Our therapists can help you navigate these life changes, offering support and guidance.
Making the choice to enter couples counseling can be difficult and scary, since it inherently involves admitting that your marriage isn’t perfect. In some cases there has been a breach of trust and couples are trying to reestablish a foundation, while others want to work on better communication, division of labor, or come in for premarital counseling. Our therapists are well-equipped to deal with all of these different issues, and are passionate about helping partners find deeper joy and connection in their relationships.
Loss is incredibly difficult and overwhelming, especially when it involves our cherished loved ones, our hopes and dreams, a job, financial stability, or a miscarriage, just to name a few. You don’t have navigate this alone. Our therapists can help you walk through the stages of grief; honoring your past while helping you create your future.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR therapy is an eight-phase treatment. Eye movements (or other bilateral stimulation) are used during one part of the session. Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.
Play Therapy is a therapeutic approach primarily used to help children ages 3 to 12 explore their lives and freely express their thoughts and emotions through play. Therapeutic play normally takes place in a safe, comfortable playroom, encouraging free expression and allowing the therapist to observe the child’s choices, decisions, inner dynamics, and play style. The goal is to help children learn to express themselves in healthier ways, become more respectful and empathetic, and discover new and more positive ways to solve problems.
Theraplay is not traditional “play therapy,” but a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. It is based on natural patterns of healthy interaction between parent and child; and is personal, physical, and fun. Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge. Theraplay sessions create an active and emotional connection between child and parents, resulting in a changed view of the child as worthy and lovable, and of relationships as positive and rewarding. Theraplay is an evidence-based treatment; shown to be effective in treating Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) is designed for children from “hard places” such as abuse, neglect, and/or trauma. Because of their histories, it is often difficult for these children to trust the loving adults in their lives, which often results in perplexing behaviors. TBRI offers practical tools for parents, caregivers, teachers, or anyone who works with children, to see the “whole child” in their care and help that child reach his highest potential. TBRI is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI is connection.
Overall Health and Fitness, A Mind-Body Approach
At Discovery Counseling one of our passions is treating the whole person. We use a holistic approach to overall health and wellbeing including nutrition, psychotherapy, and physical fitness. Discover You, a division of Discovery Counseling, aims to help individuals break out of unhealthy patterns to feel empowered and strong, and assists clients in learning the importance of incorporating physical exercise and nutrition as a heathy coping skill to managing life. We work with clients to improve self-worth, body image, and overall self-confidence.
One of the populations we specialize in serving are bariatric patients. We administer the psychological evaluation required by most insurance companies before bariatric surgery, and aid those struggling with unhealthy lifestyle choices and underlying health issues.
Psychoanalysis is a form of in-depth talk therapy that aims to bring unconscious or deeply buried thoughts and feelings to the conscious mind, so that repressed experiences and emotions, often from childhood, can be brought to the surface and examined. Working together, the therapist and client look at how past memories have affected the client’s thinking, behavior, and relationships in adulthood. People with depression, emotional struggles, emotional trauma, neurotic behavioral patterns, self-destructive behavioral patterns, personality disorders, sexual difficulties, or ongoing relational issues may benefit from psychoanalytic therapy.
One study found that 77% of patients reported significant improvement in symptoms, interpersonal problems, quality of life, and wellbeing upon completing psychoanalytic therapy. At a one-year follow-up, 80% reportedly experienced improvements. Treatment often includes working together with your therapist several times a week, developing a trusting relationship, dream analysis, and free association.
